Description of works

Delivering various aspects of works around Lanyon Place Station

Working with Babcock as their main civils partner for the NIROC project Ready Construction delivered various different aspects of work centred around Lanyon Place Station and included installing in-situ concrete bases for the new PSP building and new DNO cabinet to be landed on along with their associated ducting routes and connections, the upgrade of the existing troughing route from the station building to the Lagan Junction bridge, new multi duct routes through the station service area including routes into the existing building to the comms room, precast base installations and associated hardstandings for new FSP & LOC cabinets, fencing and handrail installation and alterations and new access steps for the existing DNO.

The new concrete bases were installed in the station car park making access easier as they were off track and could be carried out dayshift but care had to be taken with deliveries and with certain aspects of the work to ensure the ALO plans were adhered to at all times. For the new DNO connection, RC also liaised with Northern Ireland Electrical (NIE) to ensure all installations met their required standards and allowed for the new connection to be installed.

The troughing upgrade posed some challenges as the existing troughing had collapsed down the banking leaving the cables and troughs in an unsafe condition. RC were tasked with safely removing the existing troughing and protecting the cables with split ducting before installing new ballast board retention, the new troughing route and then transferring the cables into the new troughs. The troughing works were carried out on nightshift possession under the guidance of the electrical team to ensure any cable movements were carried out safely.

The ducting also posed challenges with digging tracks through the service area to install while still ensuring the safety of the station staff servicing the trains and allowing them access to load and unload as required. this was done through careful planning and discussions with the station staff to keep the area clear at busy times and to avoid anything that would cause them issues.

All works were carried out completed on time, without any accidents or incidents and to a high standard.

Approach

The works comprised the following principle elements:

Approach

Partner-led delivery: Acted as principal civils contractor to Babcock on the NIROC programme, coordinating with rail systems, electrical (NIE) and station-operations teams.

Access-aware sequencing:

  • Day-shift works for off-track car-park bases.
  • Night possessions for live-track activities (troughing renewal) to keep passenger services unaffected.

Safety & ALO compliance: Strict adherence to “Adjacent Line Open” plans for plant movements and concrete deliveries near running lines.

Stakeholder coordination: Regular interface meetings with station staff and NIE to phase works around peak train-servicing periods and electrical acceptance criteria.

Progressive protection of assets: Temporary split-duct safeguarding of exposed cables prior to final troughing reinstatement.

Zero-incident culture: Full RAMS, daily briefings and on-site supervision delivered an accident-free, on-programme outcome.

Scope of Work

Power & signalling infrastructure

  • Cast in-situ concrete base for new PSP building.
  • Construct concrete plinth for DNO cabinet; liaise with NIE for final connection.
  • Install multi-way duct routes from car park to comms room and across service yard.
  • Pre-cast bases and hardstandings for new FSP and LOC cabinets, with associated fenced compounds.

Cable-troughing upgrade

  • Remove failed troughing on embankment, temporarily protect live cables.
  • Install ballast-board retention, lay new trough route to Lagan Junction bridge and transfer cables.

Ancillary civils & access improvements

  • Install new fencing, handrail alterations and secure compounds.
  • Fabricate and fix new GRP access steps to existing DNO position.

Interface & handback

  • Maintain safe working zones for station servicing operations.
  • Final QA checks, reinstatement of surfaces and handover to Babcock and Translink on time and to specification.
